Suggested Talking points for conversation between Public/School Librarians

School and Public Librarians Working Together As A Library Community

(download pdf version)

At our APLUS meeting on August 14, 2007, you told us that you’d like to connect with each other and partner to serve your overlapping teen populations.   If you haven’t made contact with your school/public counterpart, we invite you to use these talking points (below) as a guide for reaching out.  There are many opportunities to work together to provide a seamless educational experience including:

  • Classroom visits as a team.
  • Book clubs and Summer reading lists.
  • Joint presentations for parents at Back-to-School and College Nights.
  • Library card sign-up.
  • Outreach programs to at-risk teens and special needs populations.
  • Collaborating on volunteer opportunities for kids in the public library and the community (using the library as a safe meeting space.)

SUGGESTED TALKING POINTS

(download pdf version)

1.      Introduce self

2.      Ask "Is this a good time to talk.  If not, can we set up another time?"

3.      You may have seen information on the SJRLC listserv about the APlus Partnership (http://sjrlcaplus.pbwiki.com).   Across the South Jersey Region school and public librarians are making contact discussing ways in which we can work together as a library community to:

    1. Encourage independent reading
    2. Meet the information needs of our teens
    3. Make libraries a positive fun place for the teens we serve.

4.     If school librarian is making the call:

a.      Would you like to offer programs at the school?  I would be happy to help organize programs here in my library.  It could be a great way for the kids to get to know you, and a chance for you to promote some of your library's services and programs.

5.     If the public librarian is making the call:

a.     I would happy to visit  your library and lead a book talk, book club, or other program

6.      POSSIBLE DISCUSSION: Is there one thing that you’d really like to work on together?   The Aplus Wiki (http://sjrlcaplus.pbwiki.com) has some great information on what other libraries are doing.

7.      Can we get together and share information?  When would be convenient?

8.      Great, looking forward to seeing you!

After  you make contact, please drop an email to Peter (Bromberg[at]sjrlc.org) or the APLUS listserv (sjrlcaplus[at]googlegroups.com) and share the results of your conversation!
